Efforts are under way to continue the legacy of William Allen White through ...
1. Securing and preserving the White residence in Emporia and its contents for tourism and public museum display. The house, built in 1885, is a national landmark. Six presidents are believed to have stayed there.
2. Providing an educational center in Emporia for the study and review of community journalism and its place in American life, culture and government.
3. Providing a resource center for promoting Emporia-based, statewide and regionwide support of literacy, childrenÕs literature and newspaper reading.
4. Furthering the study and scholarship of White's life and his place in the history of Emporia, the state of Kansas and the nation.
5. Establishing a guest lecture series in White's name, in partnership with Emporia State University and the University of Kansas, to bring national-profile speakers, educators, journalists and political figures to Emporia to speak on the ESU campus and stay at the White residence.
6. Securing the funding for the completion of a 60-minute documentary film about WhiteÕs life and times, with narration by Walter Cronkite.
If you would like to participate in this effort, please send your contribution to the Kansas Newspaper Foundation, in care of the Kansas Press Association, 5423 SW Seventh St., Topeka, KS 66606.
